Abstract
The application of the artificial neural network (ANN) to the formulation design of the halogen-free flame retardant polyamide-66 with natural color was carried out. The ANN-based software, flame retardant expert system FRES 2.0 for FR polymer formulation design, was developed and used in this study. The optimized output gives LOI values in accordance with expts. It follows that the 3-layer BP (back-propagation) network based modeling proved to be most useful in dealing with problems with serious non-linearity encountered in formulation design of flame retardant polymer compds.

Abstract
Our interest in butadiene-contg. polymers had led to an investigation of the thermal degrdn. of polyisoprene, PIP, and polychloroprene, PCP. The connection between crosslinking and thermal stability through an examn. of PIP and PCP has been reported. Like the course of thermogravimetric anal. (TGA) the crosslinking and charring of polymers subjected to heat can also be exptl. obsd. as function of temps. by the pseudo-in-situ XPS. Data acquisition of Cls spectra as function of temp. permits us to explore: (1) the extent of crosslinking and/or carbon accumulation of systems of PCP and PIP with/without initiators, benzoyl peroxide and dicumyl peroxide, via the anal. of the relative intensity vs. temp.; and (2) the onset of charring by detg. the limiting transition temp. of the graphite-like structure and particularly the plasmon loss (DEL).

Abstract
Recently, zeolites and montmorillonite have become of increasing interest in IFR PP/APP/PER systems. Studies on degrdn. and charring by the classical reaction in the presence of zeolites, montmorillonite in respect to blends with Al2O3 and SiO2, each characterized by Cone/LOI/XPS, were conducted in this lab. It can be concluded that: (1) for IFR PP blends with varied ratios of Al2O3 and SiO2, the best performance always occurs at Si/Al=2.0; (2) chem. compn. seems to be of more significance than other factors, for instance, framework structure, porosity, etc.; (3) in mixt. of APP/PER/13X a dramatic change in Si/Al ratio was obsd. during heating (dealumineation may occur on heating); and (4) heavily oxidized states of Si and Al were found at higher temps.

Abstract
Temp. dependence of polyethylene, EVA, and systems thereof with additives, such as ATH and IFR is studied by oxygen index at elevated temp. (LOIT) and CONE calorimetry. Influence of the content of VA in EVA on the flame retardance of EVA is probed. Results show that the actual flame retardance of EVA copolymer or its flame retardant system may decrease. LOIT is a practical method for evaluating the flame retardance of polymers.

Abstract
Limiting oxygen index results showed that the marked synergistic effect is usually true for each additive, i.e., Al2O3, SiO2, Al2O3-SiO2, zeolites (4A, 13X, ZSM 5), and montmorillonite in a similar way for polypropylene-ammonium polyphosphate-pentaerythritol intumescent flame retardant systems. Aluminosilicates affected the degrdn. and charring of polypropylene system upon heating. The binding energies of Si and Al within the system increased gradually by 2.2 eV and 2.3 eV, resp. with increasing temp., indicating the occurrence of heavily oxidized states of Si and Al at higher temps.

Abstract
Surface modification of polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) was carried out by CH4/O mixt. plasma. It was found that surface hydrophilicity could be well improved under certain condition. There existed three interacting reactions including plasma polymn., etching and oxidn. in the plasma treatment. Etching caused a neg. effect on the hydrophilicity improvement of PTFE by mixt. plasma treatment.

Abstract
Radiation techniques (electron-beam, g-ray, etc.) are usually used for improving the compatibility between polymer and ingredients in composite materials. Efforts were made to decline the flammability for EPDM polymer by EB technique and a remarkable redn. was attained through a series of treatments: pre-irradn., grafting, and sapon.

Abstract
The exptl. design and formulation optimization were for the halogen-free fire-resistant EPDM compds. obtained from melamine, silicone oil, aluminum hydroxide, ZnO, dicumyl peroxide, and EPDM rubber. Mathematic models were established based on the optimization of four specifications which are limiting oxygen index, vol. elec. resistance, tensile strength, and elongation. The model anal. showed results in fairly good agreement with the exptl. data as expected.

Abstract
PET surface were modified by CF4 and CF4/CH4 plasmas in the presence of an magnetic fields. The angle-dependent XPS technique was employed to det. the changes of surface structures and properties of the modified PET. The effects of the magnetic field on the modification of PET by fluorocarbon plasmas were discussed. The structures and properties of the modified PET surface depend on the molar ratio of the CF4/CH4 feed and the magnetic field strength, but not on the distributions of the magnetic fields. A higher field strength resulted both a higher F/C ratio and the d.p. or etching.
